D-FW musicians team up on an album to boost Black-led causes

A Dallas-based endeavor called the Truth to Power Project is honoring Record Store Day by dropping a new vinyl album featuring local artists, with proceeds going to Black-led advocacy groups.

Truth To Power hit record stores across the country on Saturday, June 12, as music fans celebrated the culture of the independently owned record stores with special events.

Pop-up shop brings Black designers to Galleria Dallas

The Galleria Dallas is hosting a stylish pop-up shop through Sunday that showcases more than a dozen designers who are BIPOC — Black, indigenous and people of color. The pop-up features menswear, women’s apparel, jewelry, beauty and home decor. And the designers will be on hand so visitors can hear about the inspiration behind every piece.

Among the designers are Kendall Miles, Robin Harris, Norman Scales and Salone Monet, whose nude shoes come in shades to match various skin tones.

Lights All Night reveals headliners for 2021 festival

Lights All Night, the yearly electronic dance music festival, is returning to Dallas this New Year’s Eve after being canceled in 2020 due to the pandemic. And it’s now out with its lineup.

The two-day event, which runs Dec. 30-31 at Dallas Market Hall, will feature more than 30 festival alumni like Above & Beyond, DJ Snake, Illenium, Madeon and Subtronic. New acts will include SLANDER, Loud Luxury, SVDDEN DEATH, and JOYRYDE.

Tyler, the Creator’s pop up show in Deep Ellum leaves fans starstruck

“Honestly, this is just so I can practice for the festivals I have next year, If I’m keeping it a buck,” Tyler, the Creator told fans at Trees in Deep Ellum on Wednesday night.

He was there for what was billed as a “secret” show. It was the second in his pop-up series following his concert last week at Hollywood venue The Roxy. On the setlist were tracks from his new album Call Me If You Get Lost.

North Texas teen to compete on ‘America’s Got Talent’

A 13-year-old North Texan, dancer Breez Carver, is set to be a contestant on America’s Got Talent on July 6 at 7 p.m. on NBC. The Lantana resident will perform a lyrical dance, a style that combines ballet and jazz dancing techniques, to the Kelly Clarkson song “Piece by Piece.”

“I always feel a passion on stage, wanting to dance for others and show them what I can do and show them what it means to me,” Carver says. “I think I just like telling stories through dance.”

Artist Jeremy Biggers tackles insecurities, burdens that Black men face in new exhibition

Artist Jeremy Biggers, a South Dallas native, has a new solo exhibition, “Unspoken Burdens,” on view through Aug. 14 at the South Dallas Cultural Center.

After COVID put her young career on hold, Dallas’ Skye Turner is returning to the spotlight

Skye Turner knew the stage was where she was meant to be, but the events of the past year and a half changed everything.

The Dallas-born actor had been cast as the childhood version of the rock queen Tina Turner (no relation) in Tina: The Tina Turner Musical and was doing eight shows a week on Broadway while being home-schooled.
